Alberta funds Crime Stoppers for the first time

Since Crime Stoppers was founded in 1982, the organization has received more than 280,000 tips, resulting in more than 17,000 arrests nationwide, resulting in the seizure of more than $40 million in cash, firearms and stolen goods.

In 2020 alone, they tipped over 18,000 which led to 400 arrests, 1,724 charges laid and the recovery and seizure of over $4.3 million in stolen cash, drugs and property.

Crime Stoppers operates chapters in southern Alberta, Calgary, central Alberta and one that encompasses Edmonton and northern Alberta.

Until now, the nonprofit has had to rely entirely on donations and fundraising events to fund its operations.

Alberta Crime Stoppers Provincial Director Mark Holik thanked the provincial government for ensuring it had stable funding.

“For the past 40 years, Crime Stoppers has played a vital role in helping law enforcement solve and prevent crimes. We are grateful to the Government of Alberta for their support so that we can continue to help our law enforcement partners reduce crime and make our communities safer.

Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477, online at p3tips.ca or using the p3tips app.
