RPSO shares tips for avoiding Christmas smash-and-grabs, porch pirates
RAPIDES PARISH, Louisiana (KALB) – Before you head to the mall to do some Black Friday shopping or place a big order on Amazon, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office has some safety tips for you.
It’s smash-and-grabs and porch pirate season. The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking you to take a few extra steps to make sure you don’t fall victim to stolen gifts and packages.
“It’s the season, but there are criminals out there looking for something to do,” Sheriff Mark Wood said.
That’s why it’s time for your annual reminder to take a few extra steps to make sure you don’t fall victim to it.
First of all, be careful.
“It goes back to the old principle of paying attention to your surroundings as you walk into your vehicle with your packages or enter the store,” Sheriff Wood said. “Always look around you. “
Keep your gifts out of sight.
“If you’re shopping all day, make sure your packages are hidden,” Sheriff Wood said. “Don’t just put them in the backseat where someone can see them and crash and grab, bang your window, grab your things and take off. We will have a lot of them during the holidays.
If you prefer to order your gifts online, don’t let them sit on your porch all day. Try to get them delivered to work.
“It will happen, because now a lot of shopping is done on the Internet. UPS or whoever drops these things. We receive calls regarding vehicles, suspicious vehicles passing through areas and neighborhoods. This is what they do. They’re looking for that, ”Sheriff Wood said.
If you have information about vacation crimes like break-in or theft, you can always call Crime Stoppers at 443-STOP to report your tip anonymously. Your tip that leads to an arrest or arraignment may result in a reward of up to $ 2,500.
