SPD chief appoints major to criminal investigations division – SAVANNAH POLICE
SAVANNAH, Georgia (July 202021) – Chief Roy Minter today officially announced the appointment of Captain Ben Herron to the rank of Major.
“Ben Herron brings a wealth of knowledge not only about policing, but about policing in Savannah,” Chief Roy Minter said. “He served the citizens of Savannah for over 30 years and commanded several divisions within the Savannah Police Department. He has a proven track record in tackling crime and issues specific to Savannah and has demonstrated the commitment, knowledge, and foresight necessary to lead at the Major level.
He will serve as a major in the Criminal Investigations Division.
Herron joined the department in January 1988 and was promoted to captain in 2001. He most recently served as a captain in the North West Compound, but also served as a captain in the Special Operations Division, Central Compound , Criminal Investigations, Office of Professional Standards, Islands Precinct, Savannah Impact Program, Information Management Division and Patrol.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Savannah State University and a Masters of Public Administration from Columbus State University. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute and has POST Instructor Training Certificates for the Command Officers Course, Police Officers Training Course and Georgia Command College.
Herron will be ceremonially named major in a ceremony at the SPD Professional Development Center at 1 p.m. on July 23.
